Abstract:
This article aims to demonstrate the importance of seeking truth, memory, and reparation for the peasants of Pedra Lisa, a rural area in Baixada Fluminense, in Rio de Janeiro, currently located in the municipality of Japeri. In order to understand the reasoning developed throughout the text, considerations are made regarding the concept of transitional justice and how the transitional process unfolded in Brazil, highlighting the Brazilian state’s difficulty in breaking with the past. Additionally, data from the National Truth Commission is presented in contrast with data provided by the Peasant Truth Commission and research conducted for the State Truth Commission of Rio de Janeiro regarding the persecutions of peasants during the dictatorial regime. Lastly, the paper explores the administrative procedure of the Amnesty Commission as a way to realize the rights to truth, memory, and collective reparation in the case of Pedra Lisa, considering the importance of recognizing violations by the State so that the past never repeats.
