Abstract:
Because of the growing Chinese presence on the continent – from agriculture to construction and mining among others – China has been accused of being Africa’s new imperialist power. But what is the evidence for this claim? In other reports, China is referred to as a sub-imperial power, along with the other BRICS countries (an acronym for five major emerging economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa). But how big is China’s presence on the African continent compared to the Northern powers (European Union, United States and Canada)? This entry looks at Chinese investments in African countries in general and in the agricultural sector in particular. The present intervention sheds some light on some of the claims attributed to China and provides new perspectives on China’s presence in Africa in recent years.
