Gabriel Souza Bastos, CASAS’ member, has just published this article in Portuguese in Revista Mundos do Trabalho.
Abstract in English: The article examines an aborted attempt at armed resistance to the 1964 coup, involving a political coalition comprising peasants’ associations and unions, particularly petroleum workers, in the Baixada Fluminense region. Through documentary, journalistic analysis, and interviews, the organization of this political coalition at that time and the circumstances of the resistance attempt are highlighted. The article also addresses social representations of memory of this attempt and the possibility of guerrilla formation in a rural locality of Baixada Fluminense, subjected to intense repression post-coup. Through this analysis, the article challenges the assumption of broad popular support for the coup and concludes that this attempt at armed resistance depended on President João Goulart’s reaction to the coup movement.
