Abstract: Food security is presented as a major challenge for mountain communities in the Global South. In order to address food insecurity, the Government of Pakistan introduced the policy of subsidized wheat in the region of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) in 1970s. What has been the impact of this policy in the region over the past 50 years and how it has changed the local socio-ecological agrarian landscapes, food system and diet of people has remained unclear to researchers and policy makers. This research seeks to understand the impact of wheat subsidies on local agrarian landscapes, socialecological change, and food systems. My research employs empirically grounded ethnographic research (Delamont and Atkinson 2021), since everyday life processes help to understand the local scale and wider social processes.
