Abstract: In this book, Manisha Anantharaman scrutinizes consumer–driven environmentalism embraced by the affluent classes and elucidates how this variant of environmentalism falls short in effecting essential transformations, instead contributing to the marginalization, condescension, and stigmatization of the underprivileged and their environmental advocacy. To accomplish this, Anantharaman conducts an ethnographic examination of environmental politics in Bengaluru, India, a city characterized by a robust information technology sector, a prominent environmentalist movement among the middle and upper classes, and a significant population of impoverished individuals, primarily from lower castes, inhabiting informal settlements within the city.
