Pastoralism is a “time-honored” production strategy that makes use of scarce resources and unproductive natural environments, which makes it a viable approach to meet current issues in food systems. However, it continues to be barely mentioned in policy circles and food production discourses, despite being practiced by numerous communities across the world. In the following write up, Aayushi explored the Indian pastoral landscape, its importance and untapped potential as a livelihood strategy. While outlining the challenges confronting pastoralists, she also identifies crucial areas for targeted interventions that could support these vital yet underappreciated migratory livestock rearing practices.
