Abstract: Many land deals in the Global South are initiated and sustained, while others fail financially but maintain control over land and resources. These failed deals—and their implications for peasant well-being—remain undervalued in debates on the global land rush and land-grab governance. Using the 2017 Lao National Inventory on Land Concessions, this article examines 707 land deals covering 296,908 hectares of developed area. Many failed due to global market dynamics, yet it is unclear whether others represent true collapses or speculative ventures that continue controlling resources, disrupting local communities, ecosystems, and peasant well-being, potentially to a greater degree than fully operational projects.
