CASAS’ member, Johannes Bhanye and his colleagues Siphokazi Rammile, Timothy Lehobo, and Mareli Hugo has published this chapter in the book “Sustainable Development Goals and Urban Health”.
Abstract: This chapter examines the relationship between SDG 9 and urban public health, refecting on successes, pitfalls and inherent gaps in attaining this goal and how they affect urban public health. The study argues that a focus on building resilient infrastructure and fostering innovation for urban public health in the African city’s marginalised communities is urgently required to support the SDGs and other global and regional public health targets. Data for the study were based on secondary sources triangulated with key informant interviews and in-depth interviews. The chapter initially explores the conceptual and theoretical foundations of SDG 9 and urban public health through the lens of resilience, considering the specifc targets and indicators aligned with the SDG. The relationship between urban public health, infrastructure and innovation is explored globally before considering the South African context of SDG 9. The targets and indicators set for the SDG at a national level are investigated, along with the progress made in its attainment. The chapter analyses the challenges and vulnerabilities of urban infrastructure in the country, examining how this affects urban public health. The COVID-19 pandemic, in particular, has exposed the need for resilient urban public health infrastructure and innovation in African
cities.
